Children's Services are working together as one professional team, in an environment based on high challenge and high support, creating more positive outcomes for the children and families in our care.

Our Directorate provides crucial services to the children and families of West Sussex with the goal of achieving the best outcomes for our children by putting them at the forefront of everything we do – this means listening, being open, being agile and being flexible in our response.

We were rated as “Requiring improvement” in our 2015 Ofsted inspection, but this is not where we want to be. We are looking for individuals who share our ambition to deliver excellent outcomes for our children and families and have the talent, skill and ambition to join us in making a real difference for the children and families in our county.

We offer a high challenge and high support working environment with quality supervision and peer support. As a social worker you will work with experienced professionals and a supportive leadership team. You'll be able to focus on real social work and the child's journey.

We are committed to staff development and are creating robust and effective partnerships with academia. We are creating a working environment in which you are proud and happy to share great ideas, great practice and great results.

We are looking for more people who are proud of what they do, who are emotionally intelligent, professionally curious and passionate about making a difference.

Able to connect with children, young people and families, you will also have high professional standards and be comfortable about using your professional judgement and skilful use of authority to make evidence-based decisions.

Signs of safety

In West Sussex we have introduced Signs of Safety - an innovative, solution-based and safety-orientated approach to child and family work - from early help, through to children in need and child protection, to children who are looked after.

Signs of Safety is about building on the strengths and safety already present with families to build resilience and encourage families to find their own solutions to what’s happening in their lives.

This means we have a common language and way of working that makes sense to us and our partners, but more importantly to children and their families.

See our staff presenting at the international Signs of Safety gatherings in Minnesota (2015) and in Norwich (2016).

We know that understanding relationships is important for effective social work practice. We provide attachment training for all our staff and apply an ‘attachment lens’ to our work with children and their families.

Why we do this…

I wanted to say how thankful I am for all you have done for me and helped me achieve, for which I will be forever grateful. You've helped shape the person I am today and been there when I needed you most, so for that and for many other reasons, I wanted to say thank you!
